Is Your X Account Really Secure?

An X account can seem completely fine even when something is off.

You can still log in, your posts are still there, and nothing looks unusual. But maybe an old device is still connected. Maybe an app you stopped using months ago still has access. Or maybe someone is already trying to trick you into handing over your login details.

So X security is not just about choosing a strong password.

Check Where You’re Still Logged In

Every time you log in to X from a phone, laptop, or browser, a session is created.

That session keeps you signed in, which is convenient. But it can also be easy to forget about.

Say you logged in from an old laptop, then stopped using it. If you never signed out, that session may still be active.

This is why session management matters.

From time to time, it is worth checking which devices are connected to your account and removing anything you no longer use or recognize.

What About Connected Apps?

Many people connect X to other tools for scheduling posts, checking analytics, or managing social media accounts.

These are known as third-party apps or connected apps.

The issue is not that these tools are automatically unsafe. The issue is that access can remain long after you stop using them.

Think of it like giving someone a spare key and forgetting about it.

If an app no longer serves a purpose, its access probably should not remain open either.

Fake Support Accounts Are Another Risk

Not every attacker tries to steal your password directly.

Some create fake support accounts. Others copy a real profile photo and username, then send messages designed to look official.

This is called impersonation, and it is often used together with phishing.

A message might say:

“Your account will be suspended. Confirm your identity here.”

The link leads to a fake login page.

The trick is simple: make the message look urgent enough that you click before thinking.

Why Account Takeover Matters

If someone takes control of an X account, the problem goes beyond losing access.

They can post from a profile people already trust. They can send direct messages, promote scams, or share malicious links.

For a company or public-facing account, that can quickly become a reputation problem too.

This is known as Account Takeover (ATO).

What Actually Helps?

A strong, unique password is still important. So is 2FA/MFA.

But it is also worth checking old sessions, reviewing connected apps, and being suspicious of messages that push you to act quickly.

X account security is not one setting you switch on and forget about.

It is mostly about knowing who still has access, which devices are connected, and what is allowed to act on your behalf.
